A A classic bandoneon by Ernst L. Arnold Carlsfeld in black with what is known as “full decoration.” The typical fine silver double thread around the full decoration takes a curved form here. This decorative detail is beautifully crafted and rather rare to see.
The stamp typical of ELA on the mechanism plate of the right hand indicates the date June 24, 1929, as the year of manufacture. The signature from the final quality control inspection on July 6, 1929, is also preserved.
The instrument is in very good and completely original condition. It has been fully restored and retuned with genuine leather valves (A = 442 Hz).
One distinctive feature sets all ELA bandoneons apart: the outer mechanism levers feature a “reinforcement,” which is actually a widening of the mechanism’s width. This widening is necessary because the tuning plates on this model are wider than usual. Wider plates provide more space between the pairs of reeds and, consequently, more space in the air chambers. The usual cramped feeling caused by having a valve and a vibrating reed in each chamber is less pronounced here, especially in the left hand.
I believe these larger plates also have a particular influence on the sound due to the additional aluminum, which acts as an increased counterweight to the vibrating reed. This is also how I explain why the Ernst L. Arnold company, which built almost exclusively with aluminum plates, consistently retained the wider plates. Yet this bandoneon is one of the very rare ELA models with original zinc plates.
The bandoneon was played professionally. It has excellent responsiveness, ranging from the finest pianissimo to extreme attack. At the same time, it remains consistently balanced while delivering great power. |
