Neue Lederventile
New leather valves
About the conditions for a recommended valve replacement and the charcteristics of new leather valves

Leather valves

The tuning can be realized with full real leather valves or combined valves of real leather with synthetic fibre support. Real leather on the wind side of each valve is important to avoid negative influences of the typical sound we are looking for. The just generated tone, created by wind, is passing first the valve. So, all valves I offer are of real leather up to the smallest ones on the highest notes.

The combined leather/fibre valves are lighter and more fine than full leather valves. Negative aspects of full leather valves like rattling or plopp noises are eliminated even in the most intense use from lowest pianissimo up to forte forte. The most important aspect for my recommendation for the advanced leather/fibre valves is the durability. Full leather valves age in the constant wind by losing elasticity (drying out or changes of the lipid structure). Depending on the leather quality, this aging causes various losses of sound qualities. Due to the fact, that a possible change of poor valves also influences the tuning, we can say, that a good tuning lasts as long as the faultless work of the valves. Our reeds should not be tuned more than necessary.

Positive aspects of leather/fibre valves:
- free and open sound over all octaves
- trouble free and silent work in any playing situation
- insensible against climate conditions
- durable

negative aspects of leather/fibre valves:
- can be mistaken on photos with full plastic valves or composite
- leather valves that I cannot recommend
